Sharpening Rods, also called Sharpening Steels and Honing Rods, are handheld tools used to hone or sharpen cutlery. They come in a variety of materials (mainly Steel, Ceramic and Diamond), a range of shapes (Round, Square, Oval and Flat), and varying degrees of courseness (smooth, polish, course, etc). The F. Dick 12 in. Round Regular Cut Steel with Black Plastic Handle is the go to standard for F. Dick sharpening steels in both price and build. It has slightly nicer features than the Eurocut line with a metal finger guard and a metal ring for storage, but not as nice as the Sapphire Dickoron line that has been extra hardened and features acrylic handles. The 12 in. size rod is the most ideal length to make sure you are making contact with the entire blades edge from heel to tip, F. The F. Dick 12 in. Oval Regular Cut Steel with Black Plastic Handle is a standard regular cut honing rod meaning the lines are cut to the regular depth for a slightly rougher edge than the fine or polish cut. The edge you can get with this rod is suitable for cutting proteins but works best with cutting fruits and vegetables, we find a couple of passes on either side with this steel will have you slicing the thinnest most even cuts of tomatoes. The F. Dick Regular Cut Oval honing rod with black plastic handle is Friedrich Dick's entry line into their world of sharpening steels, the quality of the rod will be the same as other regular cut rods from F. Dick but the handle is basic and therefore cuts down on the cost of the product. The honing rod is a regular cut and will align a beveled edge on most knives, if your knife has a very high Rockwell Hardness (Above 60) we recommend a different cut like the Titan or Nitro honing rods.
