The Universal Plus: a bottom-drive mixer built for bread
The Bosch Universal Plus is the mixer for bakers who knead often and in quantity: weekly whole grain sandwich loaves, enriched holiday doughs, and cookie batches measured in dozens. Bosch has built kitchen machines since 1952, and the Universal Plus keeps the layout that made its name.
The 500-watt motor sits in the base, under the bowl, and drives the tools through a belt transmission. Power reaches the dough from below instead of through an overhead arm, so the machine stays compact and light enough to lift, and the top of the bowl stays open for adding flour and water while it runs.

The bottom drive turns the dough hook with steady force through stiff, whole grain, and low-hydration doughs.

Bosch or Ankarsrum?
Both machines put the motor in the base and leave the top of the bowl open. They differ in what moves. In the Bosch, the bowl stays still and the tools turn around a center post. In the Ankarsrum Assistent Original, the bowl itself rotates, a motion modeled on hand kneading.
The Bosch is the compact choice, with a 6.5-quart bowl and a 14 lb (6.4 kg) dough rating on the white model. The Ankarsrum has a 7-liter stainless steel bowl, a 600-watt motor with automatic speed control, and is assembled in Sweden.
