Idahone CS-4 V-Type Ceramic Rod Knife Sharpener

The Idahone CS-4 is for cooks who want consistently sharp knives without learning to hold a sharpening angle freehand. The solid oak base holds the ceramic rods at fixed angles, so the user only keeps the blade upright and draws it down the rods while the base controls the bevel. It sharpens and maintains both Asian and Western knives, which makes it a practical single sharpener for a home kitchen with a mixed knife block.

What It Does for Your Knives

  • Two angle settings: One setting matches the narrower bevels of Asian knives, the other the sturdier bevels of Western knives, so each knife is sharpened at an angle suited to its design.

  • Coarse and fine rods: The coarse pair restores a dull edge and the fine pair refines it, so one tool handles both sharpening and routine touch-ups.

  • Vertical technique: Holding a blade straight up and down is easier to repeat than holding a set angle against a stone, which gives less experienced sharpeners a more consistent edge.

  • Built-in storage: The rods stow inside the base, so the sharpener stores as one compact block.

Choosing Between the CS-4 and CS-24

The Idahone CS-24 V-Type Ceramic Rod Knife Sharpener with Hand Guard is the same sharpener with a hand guard added. Choose the CS-24 for extra protection for the hand steadying the base, particularly in a household where several people will use it. Worn or broken rods can be replaced with Idahone coarse replacement rods or Idahone fine replacement rods.

    How to Use

    1. Set the base on a flat, stable surface.
    2. Insert the coarse rods into the slots for the angle that matches the knife.
    3. Hold the knife vertically, edge down, and draw it down one rod from heel to tip while pulling it toward you. Alternate between the left and right rods.
    4. Move the fine rods into the same angle setting and repeat to refine the edge.
    5. For routine touch-ups on a knife that is still sharp, use the fine rods alone.

    Care

    • Ceramic collects steel particles with use, which shows as grey streaks and reduces the rods’ cutting action. Clean the rods with the Idahone Super Eraser for Ceramic Rods, or scrub them with Bar Keepers Friend and a scouring pad, then rinse and dry before storing.
    • Ceramic is brittle and can crack or break if dropped. Return the rods to the base after each use.
